The final artwork for this term is by Year 12 student, Heinrich Horak. Heinrich drew on his experiences of immigration and used abstraction and the unlikely media of coffee as a tool to communicate how memories fade with time.

Heinrich Horak, 'Degrading Past,' ink, coffee, printed photographs.

Artist Statement:

Change is something unavoidable throughout our lives. It’s inherently difficult to accept and move on when it happens. The transition from one culture to another can be one of the most dramatic changes that a person might experience, it can be lonely and filled with fear. My work explores the immigration process and the affects that it can have on a child’s memory. The work contains modified photographs of when I was younger, they also include family who was left behind. The unpacking of the old photos is like trying to remember my past. However, they're not the same and have become distorted by new experience in Australia. After removing the photos and manipulated recreations from the box, I’ve arranged them into the shape of Australia. I’ve done this to display Australia as the cause for the deterioration of my memories. Coffee was used in this work because it’s comforting in a world of change. It’s one of the only things that has stay the same even after immigrating.

Hazel Cooper Wood

In the year 7 Visual Art elective, students explored how emotions have been depicted throughout the Bible and how we can draw on God's help when we are experiencing big emotions.

In their art-making, they chose an emotion that they felt during the term, and worked through the process of photographing their self-portrait to completing a drawn artwork. Well done Year 7s!
