TRINITY College has topped the class in this year’s NAPLAN test results.
The NAPLAN 2013 Outcomes Report found Trinity College, achieved above-scores in the national test.
NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy test taken by students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
Trinity College achieved above-average results in 14 of 20 categories.
Trinity College principal Trish Hodgson said she was proud of the school’s achievements.
“We have seen a very excellent result in this year’s NAPLAN test,” Ms Hodgson said.
“We are focused on teaching our students high order thinking skills in literacy and numeracy.”
A NEW teaching method at Trinity College is partly behind the school’s NAPLAN success this year.
College principal Trish Hodgson said teachers were helping students in years 2, 4, 6 and 8 fine tune their skills in preparation for the test.
“We have been teaching students the fundamentals of literacy and numeracy to prepare them for the test,” Ms Hodgson said.
“And as a result we have done very well.”
This year Trinity College students achieved above-average scores in 14 out of 20 testing categories, including reading, writing, spelling and numeracy.
The standardised tests are here to stay and we need to work with them.
A specialised learning support team, consisting of teachers and teacher aides, has also been introduced into the school this year.
The team is responsible for developing teaching strategies to improve student literacy and numeracy skills.
When asked whether NAPLAN was beneficial to student development, Ms Hodgson said the test had a place.
“The standardised tests are here to stay and we need to work with them,” Ms Hodgson said.
“They are a point in time test and the student’s result is based on how they perform on the day.”
Trinity College Gladstone was one of the top performing schools on this year’s NAPLAN test. Principal Trish Hodgson and year three students are proud of their achievements. Front: Tama Hodgson, 8, Nic Barton, 9. Back: Chloe Putland, 9, Trish Hodgson, Taylah Fergason, 9.
